What are VOC's

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are gases released from many common building materials, furnishings, and household products. Sources may include paints, flooring, cabinetry, adhesives, cleaning products, fragrances, and new construction materials. In some environments these compounds can accumulate indoors, particularly in tightly sealed or poorly ventilated buildings. While many people tolerate low levels without difficulty, individuals with sensitive immune or nervous systems may experience symptoms when exposures are elevated. VOC exposure can contribute to irritation of the respiratory system, headaches, dizziness, cognitive symptoms, or increased environmental sensitivity. Understanding potential VOC sources in a home or building environment can be an important step in identifying environmental factors that may be affecting health.
